Glossary

Closed: No books, notes, or any other materials (audio or visual) are allowed in the exam room.
Special: Refer to the Introduction in the Study Guide for materials that are allowed in the exam room.
Open: May bring textbook(s), Study Guide, and notes.

Students writing an exam on campus must write the exam on the date and time specified. Out of town students must also write the exam on the date specified but may arrange the time to write the exam directly with the proctor. Students must show valid picture ID (e.g., student ID card, driver's licence, or passport) to the exam supervisor. Failure to do so will result in you receiving a grade of “F” for the exam.

Missing / Rescheduling of Exam

Missing an exam may result in academic penalty. If you are unable to write an exam as scheduled because of illness or for compassionate reasons, you must contact the Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE) immediately, i.e., within 24 hours or one business day. You will also be required to submit a Health Care Provide Statement for Accommodation within four days of the exam date. Failure to do so may result in you receiving a zero on the exam and an “F” on the course. The form is available on CODE’s website – http://code.sfu.ca. Requests for rescheduling an exam for reasons other than those mentioned above will only be considered if you have extenuating circumstances, and if you contact CODE and provide official supporting documentation prior to the date of the exam. CODE will review your request with the course supervisor, as appropriate, and inform you of the decision. If approved, you will be required to pay a $50 rescheduling fee. Please note that vacation or work conflict are not considered as legitimate or extenuating reasons for requesting an examination rescheduling.

Students Writing Exams on Campus

Students who live on the BC mainland south of Squamish and in or west of Chilliwack are required to write their exams on the SFU Burnaby campus.

Out-of-Town Students Unable to Write Exams at SFU

If you are writing your exam out of town, you need to complete the Application to Write Exams form. This application must be completed and submitted online by the date noted within your online course schedule. You will have access to your online course on the first day of classes. If you require the application deadline date earlier, please contact CODE.
